Oeil De L'artiste

WarrenPeace is a public art project centered in and around Leeds. Its premise is to create a city wide interactive exhibition utilizing the diverse artistic talents of its inhabitants. Using a cast of a rabbit, patrons are asked to customize each one using their own style in which ever way they like. Using shop frontages and urban areas as the exhibition space, the city centre becomes an ever changing public exhibit, allowing its participants to interact with art and the city, reclaiming space and allowing an individual to make a mark.

I used red conté, charcoal, fine colored pencil, and kneaded eraser to create this piece. It’s funny…the professor seemed compelled to speak about this piece, saying it looks like an older version of me, almost looking into the past. I don’t know…I guess I noticed it more after she mentioned something.

Self-portrait

This was an assignment for one of my beginning art classes in college. I collected some black and white photos that gave a full range of value, including an image of myself, and arranged them. A transparent half inch by half inch grid sheet was placed over them and I faintly drew the same grid onto a piece of Strathmore drawing paper. The idea was to replicate the highlights and shadows I saw in each square into an entire piece of large paper. I believe there were around 900 squares.

This artist typically uses A4 or letter sized paper to do many of his pieces. He works with paper to create paper cuts, installations, and performances. Many of his exhibitions are shown in different countries but there is one going on now in San Francisco at the Rena Branstein Gallery. This is pretty amazing and beautiful work!
